Bubbe for Thanksgiving
My mother came to visit for Thanksgiving week. It was great to have her around to help out with the kids and the house. I am very thankful for her and everything she does for us.
Bubbe arrived on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, which was really wonderful because we were dealing with some super bad diaper rash and it was really stressing me out. She took over a lot of the looking after LP and helped keep me rational.
That night, after a little confusion, we went out to Rudy’s for BBQ. Mom had never had Rudy’s before. It was so yummy and perfect and just what everyone wanted. We even picked up some extra creamed corn and made cottage pie with it later in the week.
The next day we went out shopping to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Old Navy. Old Navy was having some massive sales so it was a bit of a madhouse.
The next two days were pretty normal days around here. We got LP to school and did baby things, then we headed out, Monday for grocery shopping to our regular grocery store and Tuesday to get my blood work for the Milk Bank done, to the chiropractor, and then to Central Market. We were going to get a bunch of stuff at CM, but it was a total madhouse so we just got the apples that we really wanted and then came home.
Mom got to play with the baby on the floor one day while I was pumping. I’ve been trying to pump every day for 10 minutes for two reasons: one to build up a stash for the milk bank and two to help empty my breasts because YS nurses better when they aren’t so full that the flow is choking him. I also got the idea while mom was here to get a little manual pump to use quickly to take a little bit off the top in the evenings if needed. It does seem to be helping some.
On Wednesday Darius came home early and he took YS and I to our six week post-partum checkup, which went very well. Then we picked up LP and came home. LP helped me peal and cut the apples for a pie. Then Bubbe showed him how to roll out pie crust.
The next day was Thanksgiving. We kicked it off by the traditional watching of the Macy’s (Thanksgiving) Day Parade with my sister.
During the parade, KR showed up with the duck and stuff she was making for the dinner. She actually made a list with times as to when everything should be started so we could eat at 4pm. I’d never though to do that, it was pretty brilliant actually. After the parade I napped with YS. Dinner was actually ready around 4pm, which was awesome (and would have been even better if I hadn’t been nursing so everyone could have started eating.
After dinner was over, we all played a few rounds of Sonic (emulated). LP is apparently better at it than I am…
Then there was dessert. Apple pie with caramel ice cream is delicious.
After dessert, we played a round of Sorry! There were different (new) rules which annoyed KR because she’s a long time Sorry! player and prefers the old rules (practically has them memorized). I was the first one with a piece home, but as per usual, LP’s uncanny luck surfaces and he quickly won the game fair and square.
Friday started off nice and warm, but then a cold front came in and it became cold and rainy. We showed Bubbe Kiki’s Delivery Service, which she had never seen, but liked a lot and then did a quick run to Michael’s and Target. Target was ridiculously swamped, so we didn’t spend a lot of time there.
On Saturday we got up and went out to breakfast. We didn’t have a lot of time before Bubbe’s flight home, so we ended up at IHOP. Then we remembered why we don’t go there often. After saying good-bye to Bubbe, we headed home, rested, and then headed out to EB’s 4th birthday party. It was superhero themed, so LP was in his Batman shirt and wore his Hawkeye costume the whole time. We had a great time at the party and LP was sad to leave. YS spent most of the party asleep in a wrap or nursing.
After all that craziness, it was nice to have a chill Sunday and this week is back to the normal routine. LP had a dentist visit yesterday and everything looks good, but he needs to floss more (but that’s what they always tell me too…).
