Last night I was out at dinner with friends, nursing Young Sir, when my friend’s baby also got hungry. She had some problems nursing him when he was born, so she’s been supplementing while working on rebuilding her supply. I’d donated milk to her before, so I offered to nurse him directly and she let me. I’ve donated, but never tandem nursed before and never nursed a baby that wasn’t mine. It was a super cool experience!
Young Sir is on my right (mostly asleep) and the other baby is on my left. He spent the whole time watching his mom, as if to say, “This stuff is good, but I want to let you know I still love you.”
Oh, that’s fun!
I nursed a few other babies on a few occasions and it was the weirdest and most wonderful thing. Once was when the newborn of my single-mom-by-choice friend wasn’t sleeping well so my friend was running on fumes, so I babysat (and nursed her son) for two eat-sleep-poop cycles so my friend could have a nap.
Another time, we were at a birthday party and I was sitting next to a friend who was nursing her baby. Her older kid got hurt and she went to comfort him and I took over nursing. Her husband wandered by, glanced at me, and said, “You’re hired!”
It’s funny how other babies feel different from your own — did you experience that? One of our babyfriends in particular, I found, was a lot gentler than my own kiddo when latching.
